Perfectly Solving Domineering Boards
نویسنده
چکیده
In this paper we describe the perfect solving of rectangular empty Domineering boards. Perfect solving is defined as solving without any search. This is done solely based on the number of various move types in the initial position. For this purpose we first characterize several such move types. Next we define 12 knowledge rules, of increasing complexity. Of these rules, 6 can be used to show that the starting player (assumed to be Vertical) can win a game against any opposition, while 6 can be used to prove a definite loss (a win for the second player, Horizontal). Applying this knowledge-based method to all 81 rectangular boards up to 10×10 (omitting the trivial 1×n and m×1 boards), 67 could be solved perfectly. This is in sharp contrast with previous publications reporting the solution of Domineering boards, where only a few tiny boards were solved perfectly, the remainder requiring up to large amounts of search. Applying this method to larger boards with one or both sizes up to 30 solves 216 more boards, mainly with one dimension odd. All results fully agree with previously reported game-theoretic values. Moreover, among the larger boards solved 4 were not solved before, i.e., 10× 11, 14× 11, 18× 6, and 18× 11, all being a win for Vertical. Finally, we prove some more general theorems: 1) all m×3 boards (m > 1) are a win for Vertical; 2) all 2k × n boards with n = 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 are a win for Vertical; 3) all 3×n boards (n > 3) are a win for Horizontal; and 4) all m × 2k boards for m = 5 and 9, and all m × 4k boards for m = 3, 7, and 11 are a win for Horizontal.

Who Wins Domineering on Rectangular Boards?
Using mostly elementary considerations, we find out who wins the game of Domineering on all rectangular boards of width 2, 3, 5, and 7. We obtain bounds on other boards as well, and prove the existence of polynomial-time strategies for playing on all boards of width 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 9, and 11. We also comment briefly on toroidal and cylindrical boards.
متن کامل11 x 11 Domineering is Solved: The first player wins
We have developed a program called MUDoS (Maastricht University Domineering Solver) that solves Domineering positions in a very efficient way. This enables the solution of known positions so far (up to the 10 × 10 board) much quicker (measured in number of investigated nodes). More importantly, it enables the solution of the 11 × 11 Domineering board, a board up till now far out of reach of pre...
متن کاملAn update on domineering on rectangular boards
Domineering is a combinatorial game played on a subset of a rectangular grid between two players. Each board position can be put into one of four outcome classes based on who the winner will be if both players play optimally. In this note, we review previous work, establish the outcome classes for several dimensions of rectangular board, and restrict the outcome class in several more.
متن کاملTromping Games: Tiling with Trominoes
The game of Domineering is a combinatorial game that has been solved for several boards, including the standard 8 × 8 board. We create new partizan – and some impartial – combinatorial games by using trominos instead of and along with dominoes. We analyze these Tromping games for some small boards providing a dictionary of values. Further, we prove properties that permit expressing some connect...
متن کاملSex Differences in the Use of Demand and Withdraw Behavior in Marriage: Examining the Social Structure Hypothesis
Studies consistently show sex differences in married couples’ use of demand and withdraw behavior. The social structure hypothesis proposes that these differences are the result of power differentials between spouses. This study examined the link between 3 aspects of marital power and demanding and withdrawal behavior. Contrary to social structure predictions, results showed that wives did not ...
